A 2-2-3 work schedule, also called the Panama schedule, is a rotating 24/7 shift pattern of two days on, two days off, three days on, then two days off, two on and three off — averaging 42 hours a week over a fourteen-day cycle of twelve-hour shifts.

How the rotation works

The 2-2-3 schedule spreads 24/7 coverage across four crews working twelve-hour shifts. Each crew follows a fourteen-day cycle: two days on, two off, three on, two off, two on, three off. Week one contains three working days and week two contains four, so the pattern averages 42 hours a week. Two crews cover days and two cover nights, and crews usually swap between day and night rotation every two to four weeks to distribute the night burden evenly.

The signature benefit is the recurring three-day weekend every second week, and no crew ever works more than three consecutive days. That predictability is why it is standard in manufacturing, healthcare, emergency services, utilities, data centres, security operations centres and 24/7 customer support.
